Pedestrian Parking Disabled Access
Pedestrian – The Supreme Court of India formally declared the right to walk safely on demarcated footpaths as a fundamental right under Articles 19(1)(d) and 21 of the Constitution. Parking – The worst part people are parking their cars on the space meant for footpaths and treat it as their own personal parking space because parking is free in India .
Disabled – access under the Disability Act – Lack of footpaths specially in plotted colonies is denial of access to a disabled person and most areas in the city are not disabled friendly – remember a single persons battle against Blue line buses in Delhi eventually led to current low floor buses still a challenge to make the city disabled friendly .
Most fatalities on the road is of pedestrians and by one estimate more than 100 plus pedestrians die due to road related accidents and yet we hardly have pedestrian footpaths as priority even in some of the most expensive plotted colonies the path meant for pedestrians is taken over by people parking their vehicles and then their whole family walks on the road lives endangered by rash and dangerous drivers daily their kids go cycling on the same road and school buses drop them on the road and yet their vehicles come first and for that to stop a parking policy is needed and parking in residential areas should be heavily charged and penalized and similar policy can be implemented across the city and builders of plotted colonies who haven’t built footpaths and cycle tracks should be penalized .
